Facebook Pages and Groups
You probably already know this but Facebook.com is a social networking site that is engaging a huge amount of users. Lots of people are connecting with people from their past and finding out what old friends are up to. Facebook is known for being the social media site for real life friends who you have actually met in person (but that is changing more and more). Connecting with friends so that you can keep in touch with what they're up to and see pictures and links they are sharing is what it is all about. Chances are that you may already be on Facebook for your personal life. You can also have a Facebook Group and/or a Facebook Page to promote your career development knowledge and practice if you wish. One big difference when deciding whether to create a group or a page is that Facebook pages are now indexed by Google. This to me is a big advantage when what you really want is to use social media to promote your practice. A minute on my soapbox: I cannot believe how hot Facebook is! People are coming out of the walls to connect and often its people who haven't touched much more then email and maybe some simple internet search. Fascinating! I don't find Facebook all that user friendly and there is certainly a learning curve. I think this is a need career coaches and guides can help fill by educating folks about social media and online reputation management as well as how to set up profiles to protect your privacy.
